Preventive Maintenance in Electrical Equipment

When facility managers think about preventive maintenance, HVAC systems are often the first priority. But electrical distribution systems are just as critical to a building’s operation, and often receive far less attention until something goes wrong.

A well-maintained electrical system helps reduce the risk of unexpected outages, equipment failures, and costly downtime. For facilities that rely on continuous operations, a proactive maintenance program can also improve reliability, extend equipment life, and help identify potential issues before they become major problems.

Modern electrical distribution systems are designed to provide years, even decades, of reliable service. However, like any critical building system, components age over time. As equipment becomes older, replacement parts may become more difficult to source, increasing both repair costs and downtime when failures occur.

When evaluating whether an electrical preventive maintenance program is right for your facility, consider the following questions:

  • Does your electrical system support mission-critical operations?
  • Do you already perform preventive maintenance on other building systems?
  • Could routine inspections help extend the life of your electrical equipment and reduce the risk of unexpected failures?

Depending on the age, condition, and complexity of your electrical system, a preventive maintenance program may include:

  • Infrared thermal imaging of electrical distribution equipment
  • Scheduled preventive maintenance shutdowns
  • Circuit breaker testing and maintenance
  • Inspection of bonding and grounding systems

If your electrical distribution system serves critical operations, is more than 10 years old, or has experienced intermittent issues, it may be time to evaluate a comprehensive preventive maintenance program. Taking a proactive approach can help improve system reliability, extend equipment life, and reduce the likelihood of costly disruptions.
