DLA Aviation Operations Center – Phase II

This is a technical office support building for the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) aviation division. It is a large building comprising a 5-story tower, 2-story wing, mechanical room, and mechanical yard. The ColonialWebb team installed a water source heat pump system, which includes four custom RTUs, and a geothermal closed circuit cooler system in the exterior yard. The mechanical room contains two natural gas boilers, chilled and hot water pump skids, and multiple vessels. Additionally, the project features ductless split heat pump systems and finned tube radiation heating.

ColonialWebb is responsible for all mechanical and plumbing systems on the project, and the team partnered with local subcontractors to complete the BAS controls and insulation scopes.

The College of William & Mary, King Center Addition

The newly constructed King Center now houses the Offices of Residence Life and Student Transition Engagement Programs. The renovation of the former Student Health Center included the consolidation and the relocation of Student Affairs to improve operations and effectiveness. ColonialWebb provided plumbing, and mechanical upgrades, which enabled the installation of Variable Air Volume Units and a new Air Handling Unit. Additionally, an existing Air Cooled Chiller was incorporated to provide enhanced conditioning flexibility for the new offices and conference rooms.

Auburn Hill

The Auburn Hill project, previously named Brandermill Assisted Living Facility, included 132 living units, a spacious dining room with a fully-equipped kitchen, and various communal areas for residents. The location was situated near Swift Creek Reservoir. ColonialWebb provided all the mechanical work, comprising of ductwork, PTAC air conditioning units, multiple large rooftop units for outside air and common space conditioning, as well as the kitchen make-up air unit.

The DLA Aviation Operations Center – Phase 1 is a five-story operations facility located on Jefferson Davis Hwy in Richmond, VA. It covers a total of 252,982 square feet and belongs to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Defense Logistics Agency. The building has several sections, such as a Command suite, Data Center, Kitchen, Central Utility Plant, Administrative Office areas, and accompanying support areas.

Kinsale Insurance Office Building and Detached Parking Deck

This project provided Richmond-based specialty insurer Kinsale Insurance with a new office headquarters facility forming 146,000 SF among five stories. The Kinsale Insurance Office Building is situated in southeast Henrico, between Bryan Park and Monument Avenue Park. It is a 5-story office building accompanied by a 4-story parking deck. ColonialWebb fitted-out two office floors for use as the Kinsale Insurance headquarters, while the other three floors were left as core and shell for future tenant build-out. The building is equipped with a fully integrated building automation controls for the DX RTU VAV system, which includes VRF cooling for IT/electrical spaces.

Verizon Shockoe 3 Expansion

Verizon Wireless contacted ColonialWebb because they needed to expand their Shockoe location data center and call tower. This job needed to be completed with extreme precision, so the facility was designed with N+1 capacity in order to stay online while all work was being performed. As a part of the facility expansion, an addition to the existing data center was created, and ColonialWebb furnished and installed direct expansion computer room air handling units (DX CRACs) to facilitate the creation of the primary mechanical system.

Bon Secours Mercy Health East End MOB

Bon Secours and the City of Richmond celebrated the successful completion of the new 25,000 SF medical office building (MOB) on the campus of Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital in 2022. This facility will improve access to quality health care for Richmond’s East End community and will also serve as an extension of Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital.

The programming for the new MOB will include the following:

A behavioral health partial hospitalization program, which will provide intensive care for adolescents and adults living with behavioral health and substance abuse disorders, serving as an essential step between traditional outpatient care and hospitalization;
The Bon Secours Mobile Assessment Response Team (BSMART), which is focused on behavioral health intake and response; and
A behavioral health tele-consult call center.

Additional services located in the building will include hospice and home health, community care/Instructive Visiting Nurse Association (IVNA), pastoral care, and health information management.

ColonialWebb performed this project’s Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing scopes. These specialized often-hidden key infrastructure components allow this facility to operate comfortably and as designed to serve its patients properly.

Performing all three of these trades under one umbrella allowed ColonialWebb to provide more accurate and faster coordination between the trades.

Center of Developing Entrepreneurs (CODE)

The Center of Developing Entrepreneurs [CODE] project consists of a 10-story building that includes versatile office spaces, food and retail storefronts, a courtyard, an amphitheater, and a 225-seat auditorium. The staggered roof-top terraces provide working spaces and greenery watered by a rainwater harvesting and irrigation system. In addition, CODE’s HVAC system features a dedicated hydronic heat recovery system and air enthalpy wheels to optimize energy usage. Combined with the building construction, the CODE project operates using 46% less energy than the ASHRAE 90.1-2010 baseline. ColonialWebb performed both the core and shell and the tenant improvement scopes for this project.

Garrett Street Mixed Use Facility

This state-of-the-art eight-story sustainable office building in downtown Charlottesville has 187,000 square feet and will serve as the corporate headquarters for multiple tenants. The project leverages sustainable design features unique to structures of its scale in Virginia. The building features an extensive green roof terrace; safe, healthy Cradle to Cradle Design™–assessed materials; and high-efficiency mechanical systems. It has six floors of CLT (cross-laminated timber) construction and is the first of its kind on the East Coast, joining other best-in-class timber frame buildings at the cutting edge of sustainable development. ColonialWebb performed both the core and shell and the tenant improvement scopes for this project.

Westminster Canterbury Tower Expansion and Hybrid Homes Build

The Westminster Canterbury Vitality Tower expansion and new construction of “hybrid” residences on their 60-acre campus will allow residents to “Live Life Well” every day. The Vitality Tower expansion is a 170K square foot vertical expansion with 42 new independent living apartments that sit atop a new fitness and wellness center. In addition, a connecting gallery will include a salon, barber shop, movie room, and meditation space. The new construction of the Village Apartments will consist of 76 new independent living units located in four hybrid apartment buildings that are 50K square feet each. The buildings will be organized around a common green space with a 6,100 square-foot clubhouse that will include both indoor and outdoor event space. ColonialWebb is providing the 4-pipe chilled water system to serve the tower and the hot water fan coiled unit systems to serve the apartments.

VCU Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Building

VCU’s new seven-story 168,000 SF Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) building will house lab, classroom, and office space for the College of Humanities and Science. The facility was built at the site of the former Franklin Street Gym. It will expand existing lab space, facilitate innovative and flexible teaching methods, provide students with instructional and study areas, and free up space in other College of Humanities and Sciences buildings to better serve students and faculty. ColonialWebb performed the complete mechanical and plumbing scope. Prefabrication included hangers, lab plumbing racks, and seven penthouse equipment skids. This was a combo of chilled beams, blower coil units, lab exhaust valves, and VAV units, including an energy recovery system.

University of Mary Washington Jepson Science Center Addition and Renovation

The Jepson Science Center houses the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Physics. ColonialWebb performed the mechanical and plumbing on this 40,000 square foot addition and 30,000 square feet renovation of the existing 75,000 square foot Jepson Science Center. Classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls, computer labs, and office spaces were upgraded to provide a 21st-century facility fitting the needs of these STEM departments.
